The Corderie Royale
L'Hermione
A bit of history
In 1778, the Hermione was shipyarded at the heart of the Arsenal of Rochefort, near the Corderie Royale. This 3-mast light frigate was built based on the drawings of engineer Chevillard Aîné.
On 21 March 1780, with the approval of King Louis XVI, La Fayette stepped aboard the Hermione to join the American mutineers who fought for their independance.
Eighteen months later they achieved a victory with the help of French troups led by Rochambeau and Grasse.
