Arsenal des Mers in Rochefort

The Corderie Royale

 

The royal rope manufacture created by Louis XIV, the corderie was used to make the ropes necessary for the sail boats of the navy war. It is located within a vast maritime arsenal which brings together shops, foundry, forges, powder keg, forms of refit for the repair of boats. Formerly used for the Naval war it is today a classified building, the largest historical site of Rochefort and the longest rope factory in Europe (374 m) of the 17th century.
 

L'Hermione

 

The frigate Hermione is the largest French replica of an old warship. You can choose to have a free visit (without reservation) and walk though the various exhibitions, the maintenance rooms (sails, rigging, carpentry), the quay and access aboard (superior deck and gun deck) or discover films and models about the construction of the ship. 
If you want to learn all about the Hermione, then choose for a guided tour with on the programme a "sailor's visit" and follow a member of the crew that sailed to America in 2015.
 
 

A bit of history

 

In 1778, the Hermione was shipyarded at the heart of the Arsenal of Rochefort, near the Corderie Royale. This 3-mast light frigate was built based on the drawings of engineer Chevillard Aîné.
On 21 March 1780, with the approval of King Louis XVI, La Fayette stepped aboard the Hermione to join the American mutineers who fought for their independance.
Eighteen months later they achieved a victory with the help of French troups led by Rochambeau and Grasse.

 

The Musée national de la Marine

 

Located in one of the oldest buildings in Rochefort, the national Maritime Museum exposes a precious collection of boat models, paintings, sculptures, weapons and navigation instruments. Enter history and discover the maritime adventure of the arsenal from its founding by Louis XIV to the 20th century.

 

L'Accro-mâts

 

A unique climbing parcours. In this adventure park, go from mast to mast, scramble through the ropes and look out over the Charente river from 30 m high.
